Here’s the thing…
The underlying principles of writing excellent code show up in cooking, art, storytelling, nature, history, and so many other places, so why limit your kids to video games and expensive robots when it comes to coding education?
We approach coding education differently.
From origami to boardgames, we believe in a multi-sensory, multi-disciplinary approach to teaching coding principles that is grounded firmly in real-life problem-solving.

Your children will: Slow down and think carefully • Encounter real-life problems • Create cross-disciplinary connections • Deeply understand programming concepts • Become well-rounded problem-solvers • Learn in a natural way • Have Fun!

Salt and Lightspeed's resources are...

Beautiful

I want to spread before my children an “abundant and delectable feast”. (Any Charlotte Mason fans out there? Woot woot!) Beautiful watercolor images of lush forests, stories about chameleons wielding their sticky tongues with deadly accuracy, and practicing dances from other cultures are front and center.

Screen-free

These resources embrace the many different learning styles our mini engineers bring to the table, without requiring them to sit and stare at a computer. Instead, I use nature, art, history, literature, motor skills, and my personal favorite, board games, as the context for teaching the core concepts of programming.

Christ-Centered

Many curricula rightly teach Christ as the creator and sustainer of the natural sciences. That said, Christ is so rarely acknowledged in the field of engineering. I want to encourage little engineers in their faith in Christ, and to rightly see that coding is an expression of His creative image that he has put in each one of us.

With an ADHD child, 2 sensory seeking boys, and the fact that we teach family style as much as possible (3 children, ages 4-9), I absolutely LOVE this multisensory approach to a subject that can so often become one more screen time activity. Not only is it engaging, but it's beautiful, incorporating nature, science, geography, and history into a real world approach to coding.

The Salt & Lightspeed 3 step approach to coding mastery...

1. Learn core concepts with student books

Salt and Lightspeed’s curriculum works by helping children master one major concept at a time. Each student book encapsulates one of these foundational skills, incrementally guiding them through understanding the concept in fun, active and engaging ways.

2. Reinforce and broaden with add-ons

Where the student books introduce the broad, foundational concepts, the add-ons provide depth, breadth, and a variety of approaches. Each student book will have add-ons consisting of anything from adventure books, coloring pages, and board games to recipe books and color by numbers style packets.

3. Bridge to computer-based coding

Salt and Lightspeed’s approach moves toward children knowing a programming language unique to our resources that is somewhere between text-based python and block programming. This step, therefore, is designed to be very natural to the student, as they really will have been coding the whole time. That said, Salt and Lightspeed will support the transition with resources that guide the student to wherever they are going next.

Hi there, I'm Lauren

I know that families are facing a culture inundated by technology as TVs, phones, tablets, and video games surround our children. It’s becoming increasingly challenging to shepherd our children well through this landscape.

As a homeschool mom of three little monsters, I share the desire for my kids to go out and make a mud pie, to sneak up on a moth they’ve never seen before so they can draw it, and to learn about and pray for other countries. I understand the inner groan you feel whenever they’re sitting at the computer instead.

Coding education doesn’t need to add to your stress. It can be taught without a screen, and in fact, is better for it.  I draw on my experience as a professional engineer, university lecturer, and homeschool mom to provide a safe, beautiful computer science curriculum for your family to enjoy.

So what next?

I would think coding has to be on the computer but it doesn’t, and it’s so cool! So many people are addicted to a device. Natural, running out, learning things, what you’re doing is not just reading on a screen, it is much better.

The activities really solidify your understanding. It comes off as “oh you’re doing this fun thing”, which you are, but you’re also solidifying what you just learned. Your brain is clicking in this puzzle piece and you have this finished puzzle at the end.

Your teaching style is perfect! I can easily take in concepts with your fun way of communicating and beautiful illustration of facts. You give so much knowledge and it's fun. It's family time and learning time.
